Orthography of North Saami words

We have received feedback on the North Saami orthography used in the database. As stated in the instructions, we have written North Saami words according to what is referred to as dictionary orthography, where a set of clarifying diacritical marks are used in addition to the diacritics belonging to the present-day orthography:

  • a short superscript vertical line indicates an overly long consonant nucleus (e.g. jorˈri 'wheel', usually jorri)
  • a line over the vowels u, o, i and e indicates a long vowel (e.g. gōrodit 'to sew', usually gorodit)
  • a dot under the vowels a, o, e and u indicates a short vowel (e.g. sáhkọhit 'impose a fine', usually sáhkohit)
  • a dot under h indicates dialectal pronunciation differences (e.g. áccáḥuššat ‘mock, tease’, usually áccáhuššat)

These additional diacritics are not part of ordinary present-day orthography, nor is it necessary to use them whilst searching the database.
